Home Assistant (Mind Over Matter)
A few days with Matter, Thread, IKEA devices, Home Assistant, and the gap between standardised onboarding and reality.

I have spent several days adding a ZBT-2 and a pile of IKEA devices to Home Assistant through Matter and Thread. The experience has been inconsistent in a very ordinary way.
Some devices appeared within seconds. Others took more than five minutes, with enough waiting and repeated attempts that I could not tell whether they were still joining or had quietly failed. I also ended up dealing with a broken Thread border gateway along the way. The promise of a common onboarding route was visible, but the actual route still depended on the device and the state of the network at that moment.
The useful part came after a device had joined.
I have a dedicated Home Assistant admin agent running through OpenClaw. Once the new device exists, I can ask it to sort out the entity names, put the useful controls on a dashboard and create the automation I had in mind. For Wi-Fi and network devices it can also use the UniFi integration to set a static IP and apply the relevant firewall rules.
That removes a lot of the fiddly work I used to do by moving between Home Assistant, UniFi and a collection of configuration screens. It also gives the setup some continuity. The agent can see how I have named similar entities and how the existing dashboards and automations are arranged, so a new device is less likely to become another oddly named exception.
I keep that knowledge in version-controlled skills rather than a local instruction file. The same instructions can then be used from the OpenClaw agent or whichever coding agent I happen to be using. When the setup teaches me something new, I update the skill once instead of trying to remember which machine has the latest copy.
Matter has made the first connection more uniform for some devices. It has not made the whole setup predictable. My current process still includes waiting five minutes to see whether a device joins, then letting the admin agent do the boring configuration once it finally appears.
